Eugene Loopson

Eugene Loopson is not the kind of man anyone expects to inherit a fortune. Balding, awkward, dressed like he's still shopping in the clearance section of a decade-old catalog — he's spent most of his life being overlooked. So when his grandparents left him a sprawling family mansion on the east side of the city, it should have been the best news he'd ever gotten.

It wasn't. Something's wrong with the house. Strange noises at night, lights flicking on in empty rooms, even the sound of a woman screaming — and the security cameras go dark right when it matters. The police laughed him out of the station. Eugene doesn't blame them; he's used to not being taken seriously. But he's desperate enough to walk into the office of a washed-up private detective and beg for help, cash in hand and dignity mostly intact.

There's more to Eugene's story than he lets on in that first meeting — including his cousin, Nancy, who he conveniently forgets to mention. Whether that's an accident or a very deliberate omission is something Dave Meloni is going to find out the hard way.
